Akella have just posted the second part in the dedicated Developer Diary blog for their upcoming “PT Boats: Knights of the Sea” naval simulation! This second entry in the Diary touches upon some of the aspects that players ask most often about: detailed ship damage modeling. PT Boats tracks damage from hits from different types of weapons as well as from object collisions, features distinct damage zones as well as internal damage effects, and also includes a repair management tool with which players can order their pixel sailors to focus on specific areas on board for repairs. We have just opened a dedicated Developer Diary blog for the upcoming “PT Boats: Knights of the Sea” naval simulation! Many questions are reaching us from fans anticipating the title’s release, and the best way to respond to them all in detail is by a dedicated series of articles, touching upon many different aspects of the game, from various simulation effects and calculations such as ballistics, water and object physics, damage modeling and others, to the background and history of PT Boats. The first entry in the Diary talks about Weapon ballistics, how they are handled in the game to achieve the best balance between realism and gameplay, and how the different types of weapons are treated in unique ways. Developer interview up on The Wargamer.com |

Jim Zabek from The Wargamer has just posted an interesting interview with the developers of PT Boats today, touching upon some of the most frequently asked questions about the game design, and also highlighting some of the background of the game development. An excerpt: WG: How detailed are the water and object physics in the game and how can players expect to see them affect gameplay?
AM: In this game, the Newton physics model is used, which utilizes objects and differently directed forces influencing them. For these reasons the light boats would slow down when jumping on the waves, and the recoil from the artillery fire as well as hits taken from enemy shells will divert the boats and ships from the course. It is felt best when you are operating very light Soviet PT boats. [ Click here to read the full interview on The Wargamer ] Since it is impossible to touch upon all the details in a short interview, we will be opening a dedicated Developer Diary section on the Blogfront tomorrow. Stay tuned for more news. |

Air to surface combat plays an important role in any even halfway serious naval combat simulation, just as attacks from above are one of the biggest threats for any marine vessel in real life, even today. No surprise that PT Boats features a rich and detailed simulation of air-to-surface combat in the game. This week's video release highlights the aerial action that takes place above the sea – watch as planes break apart on a critical hit, pilots bail out, or a Stuka dive bomber executes a perfect bombing run.
